How To Start A Woodworking YouTube Channel

Do you like to make things with your own hands? Whether you are new or have been woodworking for a while, starting your own Woodworking YouTube Channel is a great opportunity to expand and showcase your woodworking business or just your fine woodworking skills.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to start a DIY woodworking YouTube Channel. It’s easier and takes less time than you might think.

I started my channel and was uploading content in less than an hour, and that’s including my cover art and profile image.

5 Steps To Get Started

All great channels had to start somewhere right? Think about your favorite woodworking channels on YouTube, what do they all have in common? They started with zero subscribers.

You can follow the same steps they did to start their channels in the easy step by step guide below.

  • Step 1: Create Your Channel
  • Step 2: Optimize Your Channel
  • Step 3: Create Your Content
  • Step 4: Upload And Optimize Content
  • Step 5: Promote Your Channel

Step 1: Create Your Woodworking YouTube Channel

It shouldn’t need to be said, the first step to starting your YouTube journey is to make sure you have a platform to upload your content to. There are plenty of helpful videos out there to help you create your channel.

But I’ll highlight the steps quickly here.

First you’ll need to either sign in, or create a Google account.

After that, you can click on your profile picture in the top right hand corner of YouTube. Find and click – create a channel.

After selecting create a Channel, you will enter the details of your Google Account to finalize your channel and get access to your YouTube studio.

Once you have access to your studio, you can upload your profile picture and add your cover image.

Step 2: Optimize Your Channel

In order to maximize the reach and visibility of your content, it is essential to first optimize your YouTube channel.

Many people will find your channel through the videos you publish, but you want to make sure they stay when they visit your page.

You can achieve an increase in subscribers by creating an engaging and instructive channel banner displaying a glimpse of your woodworking project.

I like to use Canva or another graphic design tool.

In addition to great banners and images, you will also want to create a compelling channel description that clearly communicates the purpose and focus of your content.

Optimizing your content

A lot of people use keyword research tools like TubeBuddy to help them find keywords to create content around. This is also sometimes referred to as SEO or search engine optimization

You can optimize your content by looking for long tail keywords. What does that mean?

It is also important to use relevant keywords in your video titles, descriptions, and tags in order to improve searchability and attract the right audience to your channel.

You can also organize your videos into playlists and making use of custom thumbnails can also enhance the overall appearance and professionalism of your channel.

Instead of making a Video on “best miter saw” you might go after the keyword “best miter saw for beginner woodworkers”. As you can see, it’s a much more specific search.

Step 3: Create Your Content

When creating content for your new DIY woodworking YouTube channel it’s important to consider the value your videos will provide to your audience.

For instance, you might be crafting helpful content that guides viewers through woodworking techniques, tutorials on building and refurbishing furniture, and DIY projects.

Whatever you choose to focus on, staying consistent will not only establish your channel as a valuable resource, but also attract a dedicated audience.

My best advice, utilize your knowledge and experience in woodworking to demonstrate step-by-step instructions, useful tips, and innovative ideas that viewers can easily follow and replicate.

Incorporate engaging visuals and clear explanations to enhance the quality and accessibility of your content. All these extra steps will ultimately increase viewer engagement and retention.

Videoing the Content

Getting in front of a camera for the first time might feel weird or awkward. It did for me, but just remember, you can edit anything and make yourself look as cool or as smart as you want.

You don’t have to publish anything you don’t want others to see.

YouTube is a great place to also learn how others film their projects. My advice is to find one or two YouTubers you like their style and try to replicate their build shots and presentations. This will help you think about how to frame your shots and also visualize how it might look when others are watching.

Once you have filmed your content, you can use a free or paid video editing tool to pull your videos together. Think about your favorite YouTubers like Jimmy Diresta and how their woodworking project videos are skilledly edited and put together.

Do they have background music? Is there voice-overs or are they speaking directly to the camera?

Editing your videos is a skill that takes time to master, but as your skills grow, the time it takes you to edit should go down.

Step 4: Upload And Optimize Content

Once your video is finished, it’s time to upload your video.

In your woodworking-focused YouTube studio, uploading your first woodworking project video can be done by hitting ‘upload video’ in the top right-hand corner of your dashboard. Select the file you want to upload and follow the prompts.

YouTube will run through a check of your video and let you know if there are any issues.

As the move uploads, you can add information about your video and populate the description. Focus on the keywords you researched earlier in step #2.

Don’t forget to add your thumbnail! Canva is a great tool to easily design thumbnails for your video.

Step 5: Promote Your Channel

So YouTube is going to promote your videos based on its algorithm and feedback.

There are more things you can do though! Starting your Woodworking YouTube channel is a climb, you are starting from zero. Promoting your channel is a great way to try to spark your YouTube growth.

Promoting your channel on your social media is a great way to spur your channel growth.

My suggestion is to do your research on what other platforms other woodworkers spend their time on. Hint: its probably mostly on Instagram.

When promoting your channel across other platforms, take the time to engage and interact with others. This can be responding to comments, commenting on others posts and videos, or even as simple as liking other woodworkers work.

Another thing to think about is to actively engage with your audience on your own Channel by responding to comments and addressing their questions and concerns will foster a sense of community and encourage continued viewership.

Wrap Up

Starting a youtube channel is a great way to promote your woodworking business or even just show off some woodworking skills. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner and just like to make stuff, or if you are a professional diy woodworker, you can easily make woodworking videos quickly and easily.
